Summer Came Like Cinnamon, So Sweet

sangria.jpg

I can’t get enough of the weather.  Nothing can keep me inside writing this stinkin’ paper… nothing!  It’s been a busy-ish couple of days.  I have made some progress but haven’t come anywhere near to writing yet.  I’m such a pathetic excuse for a student.  I logged onto the Penn alumni networking site today and found a girl I graduated with and saw that she was recently published in some journal.  She conducted some study and was published!  A) that sent me into a tailspin of anxiety and self doubt AGAIN over leaving GW for UB.  I mean come on, honestly, I might as well have dropped out no?  I have to have faith that there was a reason I ended up at UB instead of at UM… it’s a much more highly regarded school.  Why am I such an idiot?  Anyway, I also realized that B) I love Chase but I’m not anywhere near ready to call it quits yet.  Not until I see my name in print or in bright lights or something.  I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I’m certainly not ready to get out of the game now.  Not that I want to make it to the top obviously, but to somewhere doing something AND I like helping people.

Yesterday I went to vital records and got a copy of Chase’s birth cert.  That was something of an ordeal.  Why did all of those people need copies of their birth certificates?  I thought that was a little weird.  Anyway, after that I stopped by whole foods again, but I was good.  I was thinking we weren’t going out for dinner so I’d bring home some nibbles and I had promised Ben a pint of Guinness.  When I say I was good I mean that everything I saw I was like yeah we have that so I ended up only buying some citrus for my sangria and some chevre.  We had a modified antipasto for dinner.  It was good, very satisfying but then again I’ve always loved the idea of making a meal out of appetizers.

I made a shrimp cocktail.  This is the second time I’ve used the recipe (I’ll post it on the recipes page just as soon as I figure out what the hell I’m doing) and it is so good and dead easy.  The recipe for the shrimp is hardly a recipe at all but the cocktail sauce is so good.  I don’t know what it is.  It tastes just like cocktail sauce only yummy.  Then I just had the goat cheese and toast rounds that I made from this roasted garlic bread we had bought from Costco (also delicious) and a few olives and some salami and sopresata.  Pair all that up with a salad and some sangria and dinner’s done.  Yeah, I used the box wine for the sangria and I’m so over using recipes that call for brandy I don’t believe that any bar/restaurant is serving it that way and that’s why it never tastes the same at home.  I just did the fruit, a couple of teaspoons of sugar, and club soda.

Dessert was simple, strawberries and dark chocolate.  Although, honestly desserts made without butter and flour just don’t seem to cut it for me and by 11 or so I was wondering if I was going to have to break down and make something else.

I worked on my paper a little and called it a night.  Chase had a better than usual night last night sleeping until 4 instead of 3 as she has been for the last little while.  I did have coffee with the girls late yesterday afternoon and everyone reports that they are having the same nighttime experience so I’m not worrying about it.  As soon as this f-ing paper is done I’ll get my ass to bed at a decent time instead of at 1.  I am operating on like no sleep and getting up in the morning is so hard.  I feel great the rest of the day but I could kill someone in the morning I just stagger around with my eyes half open.  I’m going to have to go back on the caffeine to make it through this… but I love it (and am almost done!).

Today Ben and Chase ran errands in the morning without me so I could get some more work done.  That was nice but I missed them (and Costco that godforsaken place).  We took the dogs to the park and got coffee before coming home to do some more work in the yard.  Ben is determined to get it looking nice enough to want to hang out in and apparently are neighbors are about to do the same.  Dinner tonight was pretty much a non-dinner although I did make guac, but tomorrow I’ll make the strip steaks that Ben brought home today.  I want to try this recipe I had for roasted smashed red potatoes if I can find it.

So that’s it.  Agonizing about work, school, and how messy the house is.  How much progress will I make toward resolving any of these issues?  Me?  Ha!  Well whatever, I’m working on it.  Meanwhile, enjoy these pics.  The one of the box I couldn’t help but take.  We passed this house on the way to the park and I couldn’t help but think how frickin’ ridiculous the mailman is to think that the box is hidden.  It’s like when the cats hide with their tails sticking out but think you can’t see them cause they can’t see you.

Going Green

So lately, I’ve been feeling like I need to be more conscious of making environmentally sound choices. Hence our inability to settle on a new car and the two bags I have cluttering the kitchen table.. one filled with old batteries to take back to Whole Foods and the other with unused cat medicine that I’m afraid to put in the trash lest it cause birth defects in the crab population (you know I love crab!). So anyway, I read somewhere that polident is an effective toilet bowl cleaner so I tried that.. it works ok, but it’s more of like a breath mint. So I look at Trader Joe’s but they only have dish detergent and paper towels. I check target but Method doesn’t have anything. So I finally get back out to Whole Foods to try Seventh Generation’s product. Well I haven’t tried it yet, but that’s not important. What is important is that the Post did a piece about just this very same thing in the paper today:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/18/AR2007041800561.html

Looks like I wasted my money but I’ll give it a whirl all the same. So I’m curious about her ratios on using vinegar and baking soda in the toilet. The article made me want to go dig out my Haley’s Hints books but I figure I’ll just wait it out. Pledge time is just around the corner.

The for sale sign next door was down for almost two weeks but sadly it’s back up again. We’re still waiting to see what pans out there. Meanwhile I’m frickin starving. Dinner was delicious and therefore sadly inadequate to satisfy me. Even though I commissioned Ben to make me some popcorn (my arguments: why should I suffer just because I don’t have time to watch a movie AND the parts on that popcorn trolley have to stay lubricated) I still feel the need to nibble. The question is… a brownie or a piece of chocolate… and then what do I wash it down with? Grape juice, wine, milk, or coffee?? That’s like a thousand possible combinations and so I’ll sit here wasting time until I figure it out. I’ll just sit and stare at this pile of articles while they mock me because of my indecision.

Offer Posted

Hi, I have a bag of XL-XXL T-shirts…good for jammies,
painting/yardwork or lounging around the house. I also have a nice
beige sweater with a teat near the armpit.

That is some sweater… I’ll take it if it comes with the teat.

Almost Enough to Make You Give It Up Forever

It’s my worst nightmare come true. I go to school, swing by the coffee bar and get myself a half-caf cause I’m bad and dead tired. I’m walking along swingin’ my bag and thinking up clever titles for a post working half-caf in there somewhere and generally feeling good. I get to class, get all set up and boom out of nowhere coffee all over the table top. I splashed my precious mac book! My life force, destroyed! Ok, well not destroyed but I fried the airport so I can’t use it at school anymore. I spent the whole morning at the Apple store pleading with them to fix it but ended up at a local place they recommended where I was informed by some arrogant SOB that it will take them a week to get it back to me just to diagnose the damn thing. Those bastards.

Now I’m back to using this hulking dinosaur of a Dell.  Not much else is going on here. We just keep chugging along.

I Can’t Stop, It’s Genetic

So I forgot to post about my most recent bargain hunting. A little backstory: We had this atomic clock that we bought at Costco. It was huge, had to be about 12 inches in diameter because Danielle always teases me that we don’t have enough clocks. Anyway, the clock dies suddenly and tragically before it’s time so we return it.

clock.jpg

Of course now we’re addicted to having a giant clock around all the time so I had to replace it. I went to Target on Saturday and even though I wasn’t looking for a clock… I came across one.

So I get to the register and the lady is like oh, I bought this clock for mysef I love it. So I say yeah, it’s on sale now, it’s a good deal for the price… five dollars. She scans it and says oh, when you said it was on sale for five dollars I thought you were kidding. I lost my receipt or I would return it… shit, I could have had fifteen dollars back. Then she sends another girl off to get the last one for her so she could buy that one too but this time for her basement.

This little pup is named Pal. He was a gift from someone at the office. Today I noticed that Chase is trying to pull herself up when she sits in her bouncy seat or her swing and is arching her back when you hold her. She wasn’t doing that yesterday. It’s so amazing how quickly babies develop. I’m guessing she’ll roll over any day now.

Blah

I can hardly muster the energy to post.  I’m trying to maintain a baseline mental numbness so I don’t freak out about all this crap I have on my plate at the moment.  The stupid paper, finals, taxes, and various other insurance issues coupled with figuring out what to do about work.  (I’m pouting)   Maybe I should wash my brownie down with a glass of wine tonight instead of milk.

Still Here

So I know I was on a roll there for a couple of weeks, posting every day for a while. Last week was really busy with the semester winding down and getting a big project done for work. It’s not even that I haven’t had time to write I just didn’t have my usual spark of inspiration over the last couple of days.

Today was Rob and Anny’s baby shower. She looks fabulous, the definition of the glowing mama to be. It looked like they got a pretty good haul :) We spent a lot of time in the kitchen painting onesies with fabric paint which was a really cute idea. It was a really good shower. Nadia is a gracious host. I wish I had it in me. I really aspire to being a good hostess but I always seem to fall short of the mark. I think that I’m just far too uptight and not in a good way. As you can see, Chase wore her party dress. Everyone wanted to hold her and she loved the attention.

From there, we went to have dinner with our friends Wendy and Brian whose baby is just one day younger than Chase. She made a delicious pasta- baked ziti with roasted red peppers, mushrooms, a little chevre, provolone, I forget what other cheeses she mentioned… very good.

I’m still working on my paper. I have an outline and I spent last night gathering sources. Tonight, if I read through a third of it I’ll be happy. I printed out the rest of it courtesy of the Lexis printer at school. I’ll have to go get it sometime tomorrow, I just ran out of time today.

Maybe something in my reading will inspire me. The development of specialized mental health courts over the last 10 years has to provide more fodder for blogging than article 9 of the UCC right?

Some additional gratuitous snaps.. got my hair colored yesterday and wore it out, a la Tracee Ellis Ross. Oh, and Erin, check the new makeup bag)
