A former co-worker of Ben’s was up this way from NoVA. She brought her bf for a visit to meet Chase and see to the new digs. They wanted to do seafood and it hits me… Gertrude’s at the BMA. I’ve been wanting to go there forever. Tonight was the night but alas no John Shields. I’m really kind of curious what he’s like in person because he’s one goofy bastard on PBS. Anyway the food was really good. Adequately seasoned but not overly so. I had fried oysters and while I waited for them I lamented that I hadn’t opted for something else and had oysters on the half but no worries. The fried oysters were sweet and plump and practically raw inside their breading… very tasty (except to those of you who don’t like seafood… I know who you are). It was served with roasted red potatoes that were delicious and apple-fennel slaw that was good but that I wouldn’t make at home. I don’t think I dig fennel enough to use it in a slaw at home. Dessert was good but way to cold. They served a strawberry sorbet topped with a duo of raspberry and chocolate mousses, white chocolate shavings and a cookie. The sorbet was way way too frozen to be served. All in all a good meal and great company.
Not much to report today. I finally took care of my text rendering issues in Firefox and I can finally read what I’m typing! It only took me two weeks to finally get it taken care of. I was busy at work today but had plenty of leftovers to heat up for dinner so I managed to get some reading done for tomorrow.
I’m really sad that all of the shows have aired their finales already. What am I going to do without being able to watch the office? I guess I’ll have to take solace in my cable shows and whatever I have stored on the tivo. That’s not enitrely true… I have so many movies to catch up on. I don’t even know where to begin.
On my mind today…. I can’t wait to be done with school!
But this time in a good way. So while I was at Safeway I bought a clearance chicken from the chicken bin. This kind of behavior is ok in my opinion and not nearly as bad as say buying panties from an underwear bin. Ok, chicken bin is clearly as exaggeration but they were trying to unload it because it was close to it’s sell by date. Since I had no plans for dinner I brought it home and roasted it. Did I post about this yesterday? Anyway, heres a quick recap… I stuffed the cavity with a quartered lemon and a bunch of fresh oregano, seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. I covered the breast with several slices of bacon, trussed it, and threw it in the oven. Basically I was emptying the fridge and getting rid of leftovers. The oregano was leftover from the mushroom caps, I usually have lemons on hand, and the bacon was leftover from the last time I made carbonara. It was a great plan, except the meal generated its own leftovers.
Not to worry, fine cooking recently put out an issue on roasted chicken and what to do with the leftovers. Not that I don’t have an extensive repetoire of chicken leftover recipes but a girl can only eat so many burritos. The stirfry was nothing to write home about. Not bad but not that different from what I usually throw together on the fly. The rice, now that’s another story altogether. It was sooo good and I used lite coconut milk with no problems. It was really good and really didn’t call for much more effort than regular old rice but seemed so much more special. I think I used basmatti but I can’t promist that’s what it was since I had dumped the rice from it’s original package into a cambro.
We ate the leftovers from Saturday’s pasta for lunch. It was still pretty good but better fresh. I don’t think that fresh ricotta is meant to go in the microwave. I’m finally going to post the recipes up tonight and it only took like three days. Erin, I want to know how the chili turns out!
So, turning to a different topic… bad mommy didn’t notice today when Ms. Chase threw her pacifier and favorite toy out of her stroller! Usually when stuff just falls out I roll over it and pick it up but not this time. It was hours before I notice it was missing I only panicked a little but not to worry they are both safely at home again. I saw a pair of shoes today that I think I must have. I didn’t buy them while I thought over whether I needed them or not but I think I do. I actually saw two pairs but I think I could feel ok with just the one. I haaaate flip flops but these are so cool. I saw these too and I like them but am not in love with them like the other ones.
Classes started today… sigh. I sort of blocked out that I registered for cyberlaw “seminar.” I kept referring to it as just cyberlaw. So what you say? That means that I now have two papers to do this summer… ie in the next 6 weeks. Sweet.
Oh, and Chelsea is a mommy again!
Well, watching them actually. I’m finally watching the video that came with the camera. It would be nice to actually know what the hell I’m doing with it. We actually took it easy today. I dropped Danielle off at the bus station early this afternoon and then went to Safeway aloooone. I went up and down every aisle and had a nice luxurious shopping trip.
Classes start tomorrow. This is so unfortunate for so many reasons but mostly because I have to get up and out of here by 845! I’m sleepy just thinking about it. I still don’t have time to get the recipes we tried over the weekend up but will ASAP. We did a roast chicken tonight. It was good, I went all out I even did gravy for the mashed potatoes.
Well, I’m off. I’m gonna upload some pics and the off to bed because Ben is threatening to go to bed early and I hate going after him cause he’s a snore-er.
So we had a nice time at the bbq. The kiddos seem to enjoy interacting with each other now and Chase only freaked out a little when she missed her nap. I still haven’t had time to pull together yesterday’s recipes but I’ll work on it tomorrow after Danielle goes home.
I woke up today feeling like ass. It felt like the room was so hot even though the a/c was on and I was headachey and nauseated. I think I’ve got whatever Ben had last week. Ugh, I am not happy but feel much better this evening after having slept til 11 this morning and done pretty much nothing all day.
…first drink a few glasses of sangria. Your thirsty and it’s hot outside. Then, at the insistent chanting of your friends and family attempt to toss the pizza dough instead of shaping it safely by hand. We gorged ourselves… who knows why. Wine, beer, apps, pizza, pasta… and ice cream for dessert. We’ll sleep like babies tonight. Think there’s a market out there for a 180 minute meal book? I would call it slow food but I think there’s already a movement out there using that. Not much to report today. We did a lot of running around but nothing too strenuous. Tomorrow it the big mem day bbq at Angie’s. I’ll have to get up tomorrow and work on the dips cause I didn’t do it tonight. I’m also thinking about bringing the kiddie pool for the tikes to splash around in. We’ll see, it just depends. I’m really looking forward to more outdoor photo opps tho so get ready.
Meanwhile, here are some snaps from tonight’s feastivities. The recipes were from Jamie Oliver and Lydia.
I’ll have to post them later. I almost fell off my chair a minute ago so yeah, time for bed.
You’re probably wondering why I would go on a roadtrip memorial day weekend. I have no good answer for you. Then instead of leaving the city at 7 as planned I decided that we should go at 4. So yeah, we sat in traffic… then Chase started crying. Inconsolable, profoundly sad crying. This is the baby that never cries so she had me pretty worried. meanwhile, we got off of 95 somewhere in Delaware and made our way to 40 quite by accident. We stopped in at Bob Evans for dinner and it was just as sticky and sweet all over as I remember… and not in a good way. I think Chase was just over being in the car. After we all had a bite to eat she calmed down and was ready to nap the rest of the way home. I waxed nostalgic about Bob Evans most of the way home.
While in the city we went to the Italian market to hit Claudios. We picked up some cheeses and a hunk of something he referred to as torta familia that he foisted on me but that tasted so good I had to get it in spite of the fact it cost 12.99/lb. It’s like a ricotta cheesecake. He said it was flourless and made with lemon syrup but man is it ever good. I love the guys at that store. They could probably sell me just about anything.
Tomorrow will be equally busy but at least it’s all to be done in town.
I call the last one where it’s at from where it’s not… or a view of downtown from S. Philly.
I finally got around to finding them…. digging them out that is. Now I’ll finally get to finish reading East of Eden. I almost just went and bought a new copy but figured that being too lazy to go and find the one you already have was a pretty bad reason. I found some more of the books I had been stockpiling for Chase as well. We read Babar in space.. not sure that’s the title it was something like that. It’s a pop up but it looks like I didn’t care for it as well as I thought I had. She thought it was pretty cool when I turned the page and a rocket exploded from the center of the book and she likes it when I read in French.
Tonight I am exceedingly tired even though I felt good for most of the day. Too tired to upload photos even. Maybe it has something to do with all the pasta and bacon I had for dinner. We did the carbonara again. I think this will become one of our staples for weeknight dinners. It is just undeniably quick and easy.
I’ve been seeing the ads on TV for the movie Bug. It got a really good review today on NPR. Anyone planning to see it? Ben says it’s too scary for us but I’ve been known to like a scary movie now and then. I think someone should see it and then tell me if it is indeed too scary for me. I need someone to test the waters, a stunt critic as it were. Anyone game?
Ok, off to bed with me. It’s nose to the grindstone again tomorrow :).
