So the mystery has been unraveled. But let me start at the beginning. Chase’s had a wonderful birthday. There were aunts and great aunts and lots of friends here to celebrate. Poor thing though was just so tired by cake time that she was totally overwhelmed and just absolutely refused to even taste it. Initially I had wanted to bake the cake myself as a giant cupcake I even went so far as to bake a test cake but or course I just ran out of time. So on Saturday I went out and bought the most beautiful small cake for Chase to smash at Whole Foods and she wouldn’t touch it. Well she did touch it enough to get some of the pink flower on her finger and to rub it right in her eye without anyone noticing.
Five minutes later it’s rubber all over her face which now looks all red and her eye is incredible puffy. I tried to stay calm but there were a few minutes there when I was ready to write food dyes off altogether. Hindsight is 20/20 though right? I didn’t know that this is what happened until after I saw this
And then this
But it was all ok because after everyone had gone and Chase had her bath and was all calmed down I remembered the ugly test cake cupcake top that I made with the best eggs, milk and butter I could find and slathered with homemade neo-classic buttercream from Rose Levy Berenbaum’s Cake Bible. It felt good to see this
and then
I had wanted to make her cake from the giddyup anyway. Chase got a lot of nice things but she is particularly taken with the gift that she got from her Auntie
I never would have dreamed up something like this but she is loving it and the little boy down the street is too.
I have an idea for showing off all of Chase’s new outfits but I don’t know if it’s possible. Here’s just one
All in all it was a great time and we’re all glad that there’s no food allergy standing between Chase and many happy years of cake eating.
Glad to hear it was a good time and am sorry that we missed it. More glad, of course, that it was just icing in her eye and nothing more serious.
Happy Birthday Chase!
