Hindsight is 20/20

Surfing around last night I found this post about preparing for a new baby and packing a bag for the hospital which got me thinking. If only I had known then what I know now! Admittedly, not packing some things I ended up needing was not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I find it interesting all the same. I packed well in advance of going into labor and still didn’t hit the nail on the head. Of course I didn’t know that I was going to be in the hospital for 5 days recovering from a c-section but here’s what I ended up needing (and sending Ben to Target for.)

Thinking about the list of things I needed I’m left wondering what DID I pack? I have no recollection of it now (I have almost no recollection of the whole experience at this point). I’m reasonably certain that I relied on advice from our childbirth class which in the end was obviously not that useful. Also, because Chase was in the NICU and I couldn’t be with her 24/7 during my recovery period I feel like I needed more diversion than the average new mother. Here are the items I found essential:

Basic toiletries
Pads (the hospital ones were huge but lacking ‘wings’ which I find essential.)
Nursing bras (the hospital provided everything else I needed related to nursing including pillows and a footstool as well as some things I couldn’t have anticipated needing).
Clothes to go home in (the rest of the time I lived in hospital robes and was fine with that)
Bathrobe and slippers (were useful for walking around the hospital)
Panties (the hospital provided ‘underwear’ but um… bring your own)
Chocolate, magazines and sodoku books and other such items from the outside world.
Laptop, Ipod, camera (It was nice to be able to watch movies and to put pictures up online right away.)
Going home outfit for the baby (Chase lived in kimono style hospital shirts until we left for home and they provided us with a hat, blankets and all the diapers we needed including some to go home with.)

That’s it, that’s all I needed for 5 days. I take more with me to school everyday. I really wish I could remember what I originally packed because I had to send Ben out for the slippers, shampoo and underwear and the magazines etc. were mostly gifts from friends that visited. Maybe in the rush I had forgotten my bag or something. Maybe someone who was there and not on painkillers will chime in with the answer.
