People Shouldn’t Smell Like Candy

chompers.JPGYou can always tell how much work I have on my plate by how often I update my blog. When I seem absent for days it’s because I’m off having fun somewhere away from my computer. When I’m posting multiple times a day it’s because I’m shackled to it and looking for diversion. I got an email today from a neighbor tipping me off on a cool site. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about it until now. I’m a big book nerd when I have time for personal reading and have always aspired to start my own book club with friends or what have you. This site is like a big virtual book club. I love it, I’m obsessed at the moment the way I was about rating movies when we first got Netflix. The only problem is that it has been some time since I’ve read some of the books that have made lasting impressions on me. As a result I find myself giving star ratings and wishing I could back them up with some kind of comments but nothing comes. It’s ok, I’m marking the days until I can have free time again and it’s not that far off. Read the rest of this entry »

Hindsight is 20/20

Surfing around last night I found this post about preparing for a new baby and packing a bag for the hospital which got me thinking. If only I had known then what I know now! Admittedly, not packing some things I ended up needing was not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I find it interesting all the same. I packed well in advance of going into labor and still didn’t hit the nail on the head. Of course I didn’t know that I was going to be in the hospital for 5 days recovering from a c-section but here’s what I ended up needing (and sending Ben to Target for.)

Thinking about the list of things I needed I’m left wondering what DID I pack? I have no recollection of it now (I have almost no recollection of the whole experience at this point). I’m reasonably certain that I relied on advice from our childbirth class which in the end was obviously not that useful. Also, because Chase was in the NICU and I couldn’t be with her 24/7 during my recovery period I feel like I needed more diversion than the average new mother. Here are the items I found essential: Read the rest of this entry »

Coriander Chicken

coriander-chicken.JPGThis is a super simple and quick supper that was easy to whip up on a busy weeknight. There’s not much to this recipe so I pretty much followed it to a T though I did cook the chicken for 1 or 2 minutes longer that the recipe suggests. The whole dinner takes about as long to make as it takes the rice to cook. This hardly qualifies as a pantry cleanout meal because it has hardly any ingredients. On the flip side I didn’t need to buy anything special to make it, just took thighs out of the freezer and rice of the shelf. Read the rest of this entry »

Indoctrination or My Favorite Movie

It was on at least twice this weekend because we watched parts of it both time we caught it. My very favorite movie! Comic genius I telly you. I don’t want to give it away though. I want to see if you can guess based on the track I pulled from the ‘musical score.’ *A hint, this songstress was recently a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Another bit of trivia that might help is that the first copy I owned was a promotional copy that was part of a McDonald’s special offer that you might remember.

So Mad I Could Spit

washed-out-whitehouse.JPGAfter the library this morning Chase and I hit the road for D.C. Erin and I planned a lunch to catch up with a woman we know at Ebbitt. Erin picked the restaurant and really knows her stuff man. We had a 1:15 reservation and the place was packed. Would you believe that when our party was called, that someone actually tried to steal our spot? Yeah, it was that busy. I’ve never eaten in the dining room at Ebbitt only at the express lunch counter (where I discovered those sweet spicy thai Kettle Chips). The atmosphere was great (full of hunting jazz like duck decoys and a giant bronze dog sculpture) wood paneling and geese suspended from the ceiling that were particularly appealing to Chase. She had a great time and loved her grilled cheese and applesauce but mostly, she loved the pickle. Read the rest of this entry »
