Every now and then I write a quick post about a special find that I’ve picked up along the way. Recently though I picked up a dress for Avery that is just so special. I can’t stop thinking about it and I have to tell you why.
I can’t remember how I found this dress on the rack amid the thousands of others. The tag on it said 90 cents but it was half price day and so I paid 45. 45 cents. The dress is so special to me because somebody made it. And I’d feel bad that the dress was so grossly undervalued except that someone that loves it found it, took it home and gave it a new life.
The blind hem is hand stitched and the smocking is all done by hand too. It’s gorgeous and so way beyond my capabilities. I like to sew nice straight lines on my machine. I like projects that only take a day or two to complete and clearly someone labored over this dress for way longer than that. You can see the detail close up here and here.
It’s nobody’s favorite color but it’s just right for Avery. That dress was just waiting for me to come along and find it. I wonder what its story is. I wonder if the person that made the dress would be happy to know that it was a sweet little girl’s Easter dress and that she wore it to the White House for the Easter egg roll? Maybe.
Anyway, it got me thinking and maybe even feeling a little inspired about something to work on next. There’s no smocking on the horizon for me but maybe a new dress or two.
