Man. That was intense. I don’t know how many straight hours of partying that was but my feet seem to. There was a party at school, a little dinner that has become something of a Halloween tradition (who are these tiny children?) and then, of course, the main event. Wow, I’m pooped but it was great. Halloween is quickly becoming my favorite holiday. Plus we got great weather and you know what? Not a single costume complaint. I think we were all very pleased.
It didn’t take Avery long to catch on to the idea though she was pretty slow moving in her giant spherical costume. She wouldn’t be hurried she insisted at stopping at every house. By the time we got back to our block her bucket was so heavy that she was limping along with it banging against her leg and complaining about “heavy!” But would she let me help her? No, she most certainly would not. She did it all by herself. Was the great pumpkin good to you?

I’m glad we did a dry run today. Chase’s costume still needs some tweaking for sure. I need to cinch up the waist on the underskirt so it doesn’t drag so much. And, oh, wash the mud out of it. Yikes. Also, I have to figure out how to make her look less Pocahontas and more Cinderella. Even though she is beside herself that she is not being princess Aurora. Why didn’t she tell me that when we started this process?? All in all not bad for starting with a table cloth and an old lady nightie.

I worry all the time that my kids aren’t getting enough exposure, enough enrichment. I want to strike a balance between having enough time to play and explore freely and being able to explore and develop a personal skill or interest. When is the right time to really start to pursue that? We start and stop a lot of things. I haven’t exactly figured it out yet. But I was thrilled to have the chance to sign up for a ceramics class with a teacher I knew that both of us liked to work with (and that isn’t too expensive!). Read the rest of this entry »

And can make a mean princess skirt? The right kind of skirt for pre-kindergarten dancing? I can hardly believe it. I’m sewing! I knew that I missed it but I didn’t know how much. I’m still loving the entire process of figuring out how to put this costume together. I’m ready to move into phase III, merging all the pieces together. It’s time for me to be brave and commit to slicing the nightie dress to create the overall princess effect. More pouf!

So here’s what I’m working with. The nightie is made by Vanity Fair out of something called Snugallure. “Silky on the outside warm on the inside.” It was brand new with the tags on and so I felt vaguely bad about not using it for its intended purpose. It boasts DuPont’s anti-static Antron III after all.
Chase is thrilled to wear it with no modifications at all so I hope she’s excited to see it all princessed up. The color is pretty spot on Cinderella. So far, I’ve added a few rows of shirring to create a waist and to poof up the arms and I’ve taken it in at the shoulder seams. Oh, and lopped 8″ off at the bottom.
I’m excited to get through ‘phase I’ and to move into ‘phase II’ the underskirt. I’m so glad that I decided to go this route I’m having so much fun. I loved hearing about all of your plans too!
I kinda maybe need to think about a costume for myself if I don’t burn out on this one. Thoughts?

But these two kids. Well, they kinda look the same, no? We came across this picture of Ben over the weekend and I was blown away by how much like little Ben she looks. She doesn’t look so much like big Ben but little Ben, wow. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s finally here. And not a moment too soon because pretty much all of my summer clothes were too trashed to even go in the donation box. First is was COLD then it was warm again but it seems to be evening out at a reasonable coolish in the morning and warmish in the afternoon. I can dig it. Read the rest of this entry »

So the very day that I knowingly sent Chase to school in a pair of tights with a hole in them I went out in search of more. I planned to order some from LL Bean because I was really happy with the ones from last year and they offer free shipping but last year I also bought them on sale and that made me happy. Ordering tights not on sale? Way less happy.
Then my friend Jill gave me a tip about Mondawmin Mall so we went to check it out and discovered that there’s a Marshall’s over there! And so we have tights for days now. Five new pairs for five bucks a piece! And not crappy, I shrink in the wash, tights from Target. Nice tights by Trim Fit and Stride Rite. The store had good selection and all kinds of stuff. I picked up an enormous pair of footed pj’s (by Absorba for nine bucks) in 6x for Christmas per Chase’s request.
I’m going to keep Marshall’s in mind for birthday presents too. They had a good assortment of Melissa and Doug puzzles and toys at good prices. I love our independent toy store but sometimes you need something quick and in a hurry, very close by and, sorry, but did I mention cheap? Anyway, it’s nice to have options.
While I’m thinking about it, another place around here to get a good birthday present at the last minute is Amazing Spiral. They don’t have a huge selection but what they have is well edited and it’s just a few minutes away in the Rotunda. Anyway if you live near me I’ve probably already told you all of this and if you don’t live within spitting distance you probably don’t care. I’ll get this blogging thing figured out eventually. Meanwhile, if you take away one thing from this post it’s to never, ever buy tights from Target ever again. However desperate you are. Whatever you tell yourself to rationalize the purchase even though you know better… don’t do it it’s not worth it. They WILL rip and they WILL shrink too. Trust me.

Where, you might ask, did I find my camera after two weeks of
not looking for it? Why under my bed of course. Where else? I was putting away clothes in the girls’ room when I had a flashback of Chase using my camera up there to take pictures. Read the rest of this entry »
