Avery wanted an all yellow face to go with her Fluttershy costume. Her whole face! The very thought of trying to take that on with one of those foil wrapped Halloween makeup crayons made me shiver. Did you know you can make your own face paints? I just found out about it. There are a bunch of ways to do it but since she was demanding that her whole face be covered I wanted to go as natural as possible (also I didn’t want to spend any money).
So here’s how we did it. I used about a tablespoon of Trader Joe’s coconut body butter. You’ll need to use a heavy cream, I saw my friend Sherry use cold cream once. Add to that double the amount of corn starch and your coloring. Tumeric makes a nice yellow. I tried to think about what I would have used if I needed other colors and couldn’t come up with much. You’re probably more resourceful than I am otherwise I hope you need to make yellow too. Someone suggested natural food colorings but that would require a trip to Whole Foods (also, spending money). I used about a teaspoon of tumeric to make a nice sunny color and a few drops of water to thin it out to make it the right consistency. I was a little afraid it would stain her face and leave her looking jaundiced so I did a little spot test first. It totally works! After a while it dried up and flaked off but it totally did the job.
In the end, she decided she just wanted her cheeks to be yellow and was happy with that. I made enough to get us through Wednesday. I hope the weather’s good for trick or treating! I hope this miserable hurricane business doesn’t interfere with our candy. Candy, candy, candy! We’re biding our time with Halloween parties, the Great Pumpkin and Garfield’s Halloween. For a while Avery didn’t want to watch Garfield because he’s bad, he eats Smurfs. No, silly you’re getting your 80’s cartoons confused!
