This Weekend

library-8220As of Friday I was unsure but the verdict is in.  Best 5 day weekend ever.  I feel like I had enough energy to get some projects done AND enjoy doing them.  I managed to put some pickles up.  These babies probably cost more than it would to buy them considering the first 7 pounds of cukes I had didn’t make it.  These came home from the market yesterday and were safely in their jars within 24 hours.  That’s my window if they sit in the fridge any longer than that they’re goners. Quick Weeknight Dinner :: Baked Shrimp with Remoulade

library-2284While we were away a couple of weeks ago I copied down a couple of recipes from a magazine I found where we were staying.  I’ve never picked up an issue of Cuisine at Home but it had some easy recipes that appealed to me.  When I got home, I checked their website to see what they had to offer there.  I don’t usually sign up for these kinds of things but decided to try it out.  It’s one of those deals where you get a weekly email with a couple of recipes.  This is the first one I’ve cooked from but the recipes have all looked rather tasty.   Read the rest of this entry »

Market Weekend

library-2269I woke up with the sun this morning.  I finally stopped fighting it, got out of bed, made myself a cup of decaf, but still no signs of life from upstairs.  Left to my own defenses I came up with a list of things to do and convinced myself that I was up for another market run.  We used to go to the downtown market a lot but for the last year or two have switched to a walkable market Read the rest of this entry »

The Verdict :: Quick and Dirty Shorts

library-2064library-2049library-2034
The pants turned out pretty cute.  They’re pants right now and not culottes so hopefully we’ll get at least two seasons out of them.  This year as pants and next year as highwaters :)  The shorts are just ok but that’s what you get for quick and dirty.  They’ll be just fine.  Oh, and that last picture?  That’s the I don’t like these short pants picture.  It’s to be expected at this point but I’d like to know who taught her to say short pants.  Funny.

Progress :: Puppet Show Tunic

library-1861It’s coming together really nicely. All of the main construction is completed I just have to put in the hem and button holes.  I was going to try to finish it up tonight but Ben got a new toy for fathers’ day and we’re both a little addicted.  He’s in time out though.  He claims he overexerted himself.

It looks kind of sad just hanging there all wonky-like but I’m fully confident that it will be super cute on.  I’ll put some more time into it while I’m NOT at the office, mwah hah ha.

Completed :: Oliver + S Tea Party Dress

library-1790It’s done!  AND I met my goal of finishing one project this week in spite of the fact that I cut it last weekend and then didn’t touch it again until today.  This is a one afternoon dress that comes together easily with excellent results.  Next time I may try adding in the flat piping but the dress is super cute as is too.   Read the rest of this entry »

Meep Meep!

So I’m not totally exhausted tonight.  I actually felt like writing something here for a change.  My poor blog has been suffering and lonely lately.  In spite of feeling less than  sprightly lately there has been no shortage of exciting events going on.  One of our cars was totaled a couple of weeks ago so we had to put some time into finding a new one.  We finally settled on a Prius and after much haggling we finally drove off the lot satisfied that we probably got a reasonable deal.  I’ll tell you, there is nothing fun about car shopping… nothing.  It was literally a fight to the death right up until the moment I signed on the dotted line and drove away from the dealership.  A deathmatch of wits and stamina to see who would get to keep the last 700 bucks on the table.  That must be the appeal of Saturn and Carmax.  I had no idea that we were going to drive away with a new car but we went for a test drive and I fell in love.  It has a back up camera!  I pulled off the lot on Friday with a full tank of gas and as of today have only used 1/8 of a tank after running errands all weekend.  Did I mention that I love it?

With the car out of the way we spent some time this weekend thinking through the week’s dinners.  So far so good.  Tonight I made this chili from Fine Cooking and was really happy with the results.  Pureeing some of the beans with the tomato and chipotle is really an interesting technique and it really made this a quick dinner.  I bastardized this salad from Ina Garten (courtesy of Erin, thanks for the great tip!) and subbed it in for the plain avocado topping called for in the original recipe.  The chili is REALLY good with lots of limey avocado on top and a dollop of sour cream.  I’m just glad I did it.  It’s so easy to fall into a rut of take out.  So easy, too easy.  My only goal for tonight is to pick which of the 5 meals we planned to do tomorrow.  It’s my only goal, I can do this!  Right?

Sunday

library-3678Cheers!  I accidentally titled my post Cheers last night even though I didn’t end up writing anything at all that pertained to the word.  What I was thinking about was the dinner we had with our neighbors on Friday night.  On Friday I had court in Belair in the afternoon.  Belair is probably less than an hour from here but it’s still a jurisdiction that I don’t get out to that often.  Even though they have a huge big-box shopping district they also have a super cute main street.  I took some time to look around on Friday since I didn’t have to be on the clock all day.  I stopped into Tiny Toes, an extra-cute baby children’s boutique.  The kind where you can get into a lot of trouble.  Then I stopped into Cafe Savona for a sandwich and, this is where I get to the point, I picked up some frozen pizza Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday :: The Big Reveal

library-34921So, here it is!  A brand new look for me.  I like it, don’t you?  It’s going to take me a while to learn my way around here because Ben updated WordPress too but so far so good.  A big thanks to Rachel Stuart for the hard work and patience.  PLUS, the next tab I add up there will hopefully be for my shop!  I’m really excited about that too and relatively confident that I’m overextending myself but I’ll give it a shot.

My Poople Hat

I can’t believe I finished this project before spring hit.  I was pretty sure I’d get about 3/4 of the way done, it would get warm and I would put it away somewhere with the rest of my UFO’s never to be seen again.  Not this time!  I used this pattern from good knit which was super simple and easy.  It would probably be fast too if I wasn’t such a slacker.

I meant to make a size 2-3 but somehow ended up making a 1-2 so I may be stitching up another one this time next year.  I used size 6 circular needles even though it’s not knit in the round so you could use straights.  I didn’t check my gauge it’s such a small quick project I decided to just knit away.  It looked about right size-wise so I figured it would be ok.  I used a bulky weight (machine washable!) alpaca yarn from lovely yarns, a local yarn shop.  Now I feel like tackling something more ambitious… but what?  I have some books out from the library I want to look through.  I don’t know, I may be entering that dangerous I have more ideas for projects than I have time for phase.  Whenever that happens I just end up watching a lot of tv and not being very productive at all.  Another look at the hat: Read the rest of this entry »
