Simplicity 3713 :: Quick and Dirty Shorts

library-0004Shorts and gauchos that is.  I stitched both of these tonight instead of watching tv although I did keep it on at, what is probably, an inappropriately loud level to keep me company.  See, now these pants are called gouchos.  So in 10 years, Chase won’t say things to her friends like ‘my mom made me wear culottes’ …right?

No matter, how many simple pairs of shorts I buy Chase just never seems to have enough.  Right now we’re totally overrun by simple tops with nothing to wear them with.   Read the rest of this entry »

Progress: Puppet Show Tunic + Shorts

library-1974Seriously, I still haven’t put in the hem or closed up the elastic casing but the whole thing is very nearly almost done.  Definitely by the weekend.  I’m really digging all the red.  I think it’s a good color for Chase.  I think she doesn’t wear enough of it and I don’t know how I didn’t notice sooner.

I worked on these shorts all afternoon.  I cut them earlier this week or maybe last week so the actual construction took about 2 and a half hours or so maybe a little less than that. Read the rest of this entry »

Progress :: Puppet Show Tunic

library-1861It’s coming together really nicely. All of the main construction is completed I just have to put in the hem and button holes.  I was going to try to finish it up tonight but Ben got a new toy for fathers’ day and we’re both a little addicted.  He’s in time out though.  He claims he overexerted himself.

It looks kind of sad just hanging there all wonky-like but I’m fully confident that it will be super cute on.  I’ll put some more time into it while I’m NOT at the office, mwah hah ha.

Last Thoughts on the Tea Party Dress

library-1821library-1822library-1824

  1. This dress has great swing!
  2. It’s actually pink not orange.  Natural light is an amazing thing.
  3. One thing I learned during the construction process is that the seams on the skirt need to be clipped almost from top to bottom to get them to lie flat not just along the obvious curve.
  4. The instructions for this patters are great including the tips given with the trickiest steps.

Happy weekend!

Completed :: Oliver + S Tea Party Dress

library-1790It’s done!  AND I met my goal of finishing one project this week in spite of the fact that I cut it last weekend and then didn’t touch it again until today.  This is a one afternoon dress that comes together easily with excellent results.  Next time I may try adding in the flat piping but the dress is super cute as is too.   Read the rest of this entry »

Hungies

That about describes where I am right now.  Which is fine except I spend a lot of time being very hungry and standing in front of the open refrigerator and wondering how it’s possible for it to be so full and yet so devoid of anything edible.  Sometimes I go to Trader Joe’s and buy all of the appealing snacks hoping that it will be enough to keep me going for a while.  And for a short time Read the rest of this entry »

Spring Jacket

library-3681I was so excited about this project.  First I found and fell in love with this cute seersucker that I found at  A Fabric Place.  Then, Dan came up with the idea of making a little jacket with it and I found a “simple” pattern for a jacket in my stash.  I put simple in quotation marks because I believe this pattern was marked quick and easy but it very nearly killed me.  The blasted sleeves on this thing are so small I don’t know how… I cannot conceive of any way that you could possibly put this thing together entirely by machine.

The Chiffon Dancing Skirt (with Cut-On Waist!)

I got the idea for this skirt from the most recent issue of Threads magazine.  There’s an article in the issue about making a layered chiffon skirt… for an adult.  I’m totally digging the idea of riffing on commercial patterns rather than being totally beholden to them.  I made a couple of modifications to the instructions but basically followed the steps outlined to create a tiny version for Chase.

I reduced the number of channels in the waistband down to two.  I love the simplicity of the cut-on waistband.  You just can’t get any easier than that and the look of this skirt is perfect for the application.  I may have skimped a little when putting in the elastic for the waist so I hope it fits her come spring.

I used a really simple girls’ skirt pattern.  The whole project took me about a day to complete during nap-time and after bed.  It was a fun project except that even though the fabric store has a pretty good selection of colors, I didn’t like any of them.  I managed to find some that I thought worked together but it wasn’t easy.

Now, somebody buy me a steamer.  AND I need some ideas for what to do with some seersucker that I bought at A Fabric Place with a cute, summery print on it.

Girl’s All-In-One Bandeau top Jumper Tutorial

Inspired by the halter top jumper I made last week I spent many restless nights thinking this project through.  It took me a trip to baby gap plus another 5 days to actually put pencil to paper on it.  The finished product isn’t exactly how I envisioned it but once I started to really think about it it took on a life of its own.  I liked the really soft knit style that I saw in the stores and I might give one like that a try next.  Here’s how it all started:

You could trace a pair of your child’s shorts but I played it safe and started with the shorts pattern from Butterick 4503.  An even simpler short pattern, i.e. 4 identical pieces for front and back, would be even easier.  Come to think of it, you could even eliminate one set of seams if you did it that way.  The project requires astoundingly little fabric, about a half a yard is enough to make the jumper and the belt.

Mmm, Weekend

I love weekends, love them!  Danielle is here visiting, I let her cut all my hair off.  It barely sweeps the bottom of my earlobes now.  She must have cut off 8 inches.  I bought some more curl enhancer from Aveda and so far so good so we’ll see.  I’m hoping to leave the old triple-wrap pony behind me.  So far I’m loving it, I feel so liberated.

I made pesto tonight.  I love Jamie Oliver’s recipe for pesto genovese.  I used to be so reluctant to make pesto but who knows why.  It’s a great recipe to make in quantity and throw in the freezer to have on hand, not to mention that this is the time to do it.  A bunch of basil costs 2 dollars at the farmer’s market and in a couple of weeks the same bunch will probably only cost a dollar.  I can only imagine that in my pre-farmer’s market days buying the little packages at the grocery store where the basil is 5 dollars for three little leaves made the whole production prohibitively expensive.  We bough a nice bottle of crisp rose to combat the summer heat.  You know how we wine connoisseurs made our selection?  Danielle always chooses based on the packaging and who was I to challenge that kind of logic?

This was Chase’s weekend.  She got some toys yesterday and scored a few more new things today.  Danielle requested a trip to the mall where Chase picked out some new dodads for her crocs and then since her diaper leaked a new pair of shorts.  Did you know baby gap has a bathroom with a changing station and an armchair that’s nice and clean?  I didn’t either.  If your baby’s diaper is going to explode with poo, baby gap is the place to be.  A trip to Child’s Play for a birthday present yielded a few more small toys including the kazoo I’ve been promising her.  It didn’t take her long to get it either, she’s pretty good on the kazoo.

I’m so happy with the garden.  We found just a handful of ripe berries on the blueberry bush.  This is its first year in the ground so we’re pretty happy that it’s even alive let alone that it produced a couple of berries.  They lasted all of 10 seconds.  Anything that ripens in our yard goes straight down Chase’s gullet.  Blueberries and peas alike.  You won’t see this mommy complaining that anyone is eating all the peas.

Here are the pictures of the dress.  They’re not the most flattering pictures but they were the best I could do under the circumstances.  I’m hoping that with a couple of washes, the neck strap will take on something of a chenille effect fraying just a little.  I sewed the strap in half down the center then cut along the fold so that there are 4 raw edges, it’s something of an experiment as I don’t really know how it will turn out.  Chase like her big art deco button.  I have a plain wooden flower button on there that I really liked but that choice was vetoed.  I found this great idea here.  It gives me a great idea for a similar summer outfit I’d love to figure out a pattern for.
