Today the kids made the smallest leaf pile in the world and jumped into it. The leaves are falling, we’ve got pumpkins, we’ve been apple picking and we’ve got Halloween costumes and all in spite of the fact that I found the weather today to be unpleasantly warm for the season. I love a good Halloween costume challenge. This year Avery wants to be Fluttershy pony and Chase wants to be a mermaid. Both costumes are done enough at this point that I feel confident that I won’t be up until midnight the night before Halloween (maybe just until 11). I had to buy a couple of yards of fabric to make Avery’s but everything I needed for Chase’s I had around the house. I’m pretty excited about this mermaid costume. She asked me to sew on some shells so I’m going to do that. It definitely needs a little bling. Come on Halloween! We have our giant bag of candy! We’re ready! Read the rest of this entry »

Man. That was intense. I don’t know how many straight hours of partying that was but my feet seem to. There was a party at school, a little dinner that has become something of a Halloween tradition (who are these tiny children?) and then, of course, the main event. Wow, I’m pooped but it was great. Halloween is quickly becoming my favorite holiday. Plus we got great weather and you know what? Not a single costume complaint. I think we were all very pleased.
It didn’t take Avery long to catch on to the idea though she was pretty slow moving in her giant spherical costume. She wouldn’t be hurried she insisted at stopping at every house. By the time we got back to our block her bucket was so heavy that she was limping along with it banging against her leg and complaining about “heavy!” But would she let me help her? No, she most certainly would not. She did it all by herself. Was the great pumpkin good to you?

I’m glad we did a dry run today. Chase’s costume still needs some tweaking for sure. I need to cinch up the waist on the underskirt so it doesn’t drag so much. And, oh, wash the mud out of it. Yikes. Also, I have to figure out how to make her look less Pocahontas and more Cinderella. Even though she is beside herself that she is not being princess Aurora. Why didn’t she tell me that when we started this process?? All in all not bad for starting with a table cloth and an old lady nightie.

And can make a mean princess skirt? The right kind of skirt for pre-kindergarten dancing? I can hardly believe it. I’m sewing! I knew that I missed it but I didn’t know how much. I’m still loving the entire process of figuring out how to put this costume together. I’m ready to move into phase III, merging all the pieces together. It’s time for me to be brave and commit to slicing the nightie dress to create the overall princess effect. More pouf!

So here’s what I’m working with. The nightie is made by Vanity Fair out of something called Snugallure. “Silky on the outside warm on the inside.” It was brand new with the tags on and so I felt vaguely bad about not using it for its intended purpose. It boasts DuPont’s anti-static Antron III after all.
Chase is thrilled to wear it with no modifications at all so I hope she’s excited to see it all princessed up. The color is pretty spot on Cinderella. So far, I’ve added a few rows of shirring to create a waist and to poof up the arms and I’ve taken it in at the shoulder seams. Oh, and lopped 8″ off at the bottom.
I’m excited to get through ‘phase I’ and to move into ‘phase II’ the underskirt. I’m so glad that I decided to go this route I’m having so much fun. I loved hearing about all of your plans too!
I kinda maybe need to think about a costume for myself if I don’t burn out on this one. Thoughts?

But these two kids. Well, they kinda look the same, no? We came across this picture of Ben over the weekend and I was blown away by how much like little Ben she looks. She doesn’t look so much like big Ben but little Ben, wow. Read the rest of this entry »

It was mostly a blur for me but I hear that the kids had fun. Today, While Chase was at school, Avery spent most of the day going through her candy bucket and trying to remember what she was supposed to do with a lollipop. Step 1, get lollipop from sister’s bucket. Step 2, put lollipop in mouth. Wait… something’s not right. You there, lady, open this. Read the rest of this entry »

She never said anything about it but I started to think it might be about the shoes. I thought she’d be thrilled to have a princess dress to dress up in. It’s almost always the first thing she runs for when she gets to school. But at school they also have a pair of “glass” slippers. So, that’s what we did. And sure enough AS SOON as she had them she was asking where’s my dress and wanting to wear it! Phew. I was getting really worried. We have no alternates. Now as soon as I remember the safe place that Avery’s mouse costume is hiding in I’ll be in great shape. I even decided to dress up as a witch! I’m pretty sure I got rid of the old cowboy boots, I think Ben’s going to dodge a bullet on this one.

Sorry if I’ve been a bit neglectful. I’ve come down with something and have spent the last couple of days more or less being a slug. I hate being sick while I’m pregnant because I worry about all kinds of things I wouldn’t otherwise worry about. Of course, that doesn’t mean I call my ob to put my mind at ease. It means I go back and forth between worrying that something’s wrong and wondering if I’m overreacting. Makes me feel like a maniac. The good news is my regularly scheduled visit is tomorrow so hopefully I can get this off my mind. Read the rest of this entry »
