We are so, so glad to have the dad part of our family back around these parts. He was in San Fransisco for 2.5 weeks. We managed but are so glad to have him home. We enjoyed a nice day even if it did involve rescuing the Prius from the long term parking lot at the airport. There was also Mexican food, a margarita and a trip to Target so, all in all, pretty good.
I love these kids. Bennett was her sweet self. Avery wore a purple dress-up Rapunzel/ballerina combo over her pink poly princess nighty with a pair of jelly sandals to the playground. Chase tasted ketchup* for the first time in five years and, in the spirit of being adventurous and having Mexican food for lunch, declared it spicy and delicious. Later, during a rousing round of money flash cards that she insisted on trying, in response to my gentle prodding toward the answer she declared JUST GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!
I’m up to my ears in party supplies for a certain little person’s birthday party next weekend. I can’t even believe it. I’m just going to eat so much cake this week. That’s how I think I’ll handle this. The girls keep talking about how she’ll be a big girl. They are so excited. There are presents hiding all over the house.
Happy Mother’s Day, friends. I love you all.

They just speed by lately but the weather’s nice and we’re feeling fine.

So, so exciting! Bennett got to be a part of a shoot for the May issue of Baltimore Magazine. Those sainted folks shot the entire piece today… fifteen kids. Fifteen! I only had to cope with one and I felt like I had to lie down afterwards.
I mean it was great. Shot in a beautiful studio space, with awesome people and the CUTEST clothes. Bennett had the most Cutey McCuterson outfit to wear. I peeked a little bit at some of the other stuff that got pulled and totally wanted one of everything.
We had a great time… until the crying. Oh, poor girl, the crying (by girl, of course, I mean me). I picked her up and she was all soggy from water from an earlier shoot and there was no recovering from that. Or maybe she was hungry or tired or had gas or who knows?? It’s the thinking about it that makes me want to lie down. So I’m not thinking about it anymore.
Instead I’m going to look at that sweet smiling face, pretend that it went like that the entire time and cross my fingers that one of those shots from the pre-crying photos makes the cut. Plus a glass of wine and maybe a cookie. Yes. Definitely a cookie and some wine.

Nothing big just the sun. The SUN! We did a lot of walking today. Which was good because I might have fallen asleep behind the wheel.
We have a visitor this week and so we’re bunking with the baby. Terrible. Just terrible. Everything after 11pm is terrible. I’m trying to fill the space vacated by sleep with coffee but it’s not really working for me. The fresh air was good.
So tired that I couldn’t bring myself to walk all three girls back to school after I picked up Chase early for a doctors appointment that was ultimately cancelled. Mother of the year over here. I let them play in the back yard instead.
It was a busy day maybe everyone will sleep well.

Dancing with bloomers on her head, “look at my great hat!”
Making and eating the most delicious carrot cake ever.
Loving these stripes and thinking about ways to see more.
Also, getting serious about Valentines.

I wish the pictures weren’t so grainy but the battery in my camera is dead. Besides, it’s just Tuesday.

It’s so hard! I want my baby to stay small and yet every day is still a vigilant watch for signs of new milestones. I confess that I let her eat a crumb off the living room floor because she tried so hard to wiggle over and get it. But, in my defense, it was a fresh crumb from a homemade scone so it’s fine, right?

I feel bad because I haven’t been updating here and I know that things are happening that I already don’t remember. I realized Read the rest of this entry »

We made cookies this afternoon and, while I was poking around in our family cookbook for the recipe we needed, I came across this page from an issue of Sassy magazine that I ripped out once upon a time and saved. It’s a recipe for carrot cake in an article about Mike D. making a fifth birthday cake for Sassy magazine which, somehow, about sums up my life at the time. What year was that? The internet tells me it was approximately 1993. So there you have it.
I’ve never used this recipe but finding and reading it amused me so much that I wanted to give it a whirl until I actually, you know, read the recipe and noticed that it’s from a book titled “I Can’t Believe It Has No Sugar” and decided to pass. It’s sweetened entirely with unsweetened fruit juice concentrates! Where would I even buy that? Where could you buy that in the 90’s for crying out loud? Crazy New Yorkers with their health food stores.
What was your favorite teen reading?

I feel like I should check in here even though I’ve enjoyed this nice long break so much! Christmas was lovely and, quite wonderfully, uneventful. Over the holiday I got sucked into Scandal. Are you watching that? If you liked Damages, have ever dreamed of secretly making love to the president in the oval office, have ever dreamed of being a high powered somebody in DC or maybe think that John Stewart is a little bit cute then this show is for you. I’m all caught up now and ready for it to start again in January and Downton, don’t forget Downton. The new year promises to bring great things (to my tv).
Bennett is growing at an alarming rate. You go to sleep one night with a baby who is happy to sit up and play with whatever you give her to waking up with a baby who, instead of sitting in one place, launches herself kamikaze style toward anything she things looks Read the rest of this entry »
