Mermaid In Progress

I love a good Halloween costume challenge. This year Avery wants to be Fluttershy pony and Chase wants to be a mermaid. Both costumes are done enough at this point that I feel confident that I won’t be up until midnight the night before Halloween (maybe just until 11). I had to buy a couple of yards of fabric to make Avery’s but everything I needed for Chase’s I had around the house. I’m pretty excited about this mermaid costume. She asked me to sew on some shells so I’m going to do that. It definitely needs a little bling. Come on Halloween! We have our giant bag of candy! We’re ready! Read the rest of this entry »

Sherbet Chillers

While we were away this summer I ate a lot of sherbet. Whenever the opportunity for a frozen treat presented itself it just always seemed like the right choice. At one spot I ordered a sherbet chiller and it was delightful! As far as I could tell from the menu a sherbet chiller is made using sherbet, syrup and soda water. It was delightful! So good that I’ve started making them at home.  Read the rest of this entry »

Cobbler Cobbler Mend My Shoe

Another winner from Martha’s book. I made this on Sunday. It was ok warm out of the oven at lunchtime but most delicious when fully cooled after dinner. I like that a little fresh ginger gets mixed in with the fruit. We ate it plain but it would be great with a scoop of ice cream or, even better, a dollop of whipped cream. Here’s the recipe: Read the rest of this entry »

That’s what we called corn dogs at home. I’ve been cooking from Martha’s new cookbook that I borrowed from the library. Usually her cookbooks are only so so but this one is really cool with big beautiful photos and interesting backstories about the recipes. It’s organized regionally highlighting specialties from around the country. I might be tempted to buy this one.  Read the rest of this entry »

Street Corn

It’s summer in Maryland which means we’re eating about a dozen ears of corn and a whole watermelon weekly. A perfectly boiled ear dressed with a little butter and salt is totally delicious but I’ve been wanting to try this Mexican style grilled corn for a long time.

I used this recipe except, and you know how the rest of this sentence goes, I didn’t. I did mostly follow the recipe but I subbed Feta for the cotija cheese because that’s what I had. I thought it was delicious but I was kind of sad about that because how do you choose between two delicious toppings? So I decided that grilled corn gets this preparation otherwise I’ll stick with the traditional butter preparation. Yum! The next thing I want to try are these pickles.

The Sauce

After The Pizza this is the recipe that I get the most requests for.  It’s a great versatile tomato sauce. This week I used it on leftover chicken cutlets to turn them into chicken parm, again tonight as pizza sauce and I’ll probably use it once more this weekend as sauce for ravioli before sticking any leftovers in the freezer. That’s the other thing I love about this recipe. It makes a ton.  Read the rest of this entry »

Even 20 + Blueberry Nutmeg Cake

There are 19 items on our summer bucket list.  I need one more to make it an even 20.  I thought of something today but never wrote it down so I’m still in the market for a good idea.  The bug museum sounds intriguing…  Read the rest of this entry »

Pimiento Cheese Burgers And Oven Fries

I got Ben all set up and we tagged team dinner.  We were so fortunate to have so many friends pitch in to make us dinner over these past three weeks but we’re down to our last meal and have to start getting back in the game.  I dog eared this month’s Everyday Food like crazy and the recipe for pimiento cheese burgers went right to the top of my list.   Read the rest of this entry »

BIG Cookie

I feel like I should tell you about this cookie.  Truthfully it’s not mine to share because it really belongs to my friend Jill.  She’s the queen of the chocolate chip skillet cookie.  But still I feel like you should know. Read the rest of this entry »

Phoning It In

Lately I’m too lazy to take any real pictures.  It’s so much easier to use my phone when the picture it takes are half decent.  I just have to decide on my favorite filter now and stick with it.

We had a good weekend.  I cleaned like a crazy person yesterday before having people over.  I Read the rest of this entry »
